I was fortunate to fly Delta One from MSP (Minneapolis-St.Paul Airport – a Delta hub) to Paris, departure at 4:25 PM. The direct flight is 7 hours and 20 minutes long. The shortest 7 hours of my life. Everything from the TUMI amenity kit, offering eyeshades, socks, LE LABO lotion and lip balm to the chef-curated meals, the crew/service while flying Delta One is world-class. I have to admit, I ate and drank more than I should have, but without a doubt the smoothest most comfortable ride I have ever been on.
BEFORE THE FLIGHT
We showed up at the airport close to 2 hours before boarding due to an anticipated long drive. Due to the long wait before boarding, we treated ourselves to the Delta Sky Club. As some may know, the Minneapolis airport recently renovated this space.
When you fly first class with Delta, you gain access to the Sky Club, accelerated check-in, security and baggage handling service. Inside you can expect a buffet-style lunch, open bar, accommodating service, and seating for any preference. In my opinion, if you have more than 2 hours before boarding, it is worth every penny to buy a day pass (cheaper with a Delta Amex). This experience makes the wait worth every second, sometimes wishing it was longer…
As usual, when boarding the plan you are welcomed by the staff/flight attendants. Then things get a little fancy (fancy for me). They ask to take your coat and lead you to your seat.
After getting settled in, peak into the amenity kit, situate the pillow, blanket, and headphones, the staff brings you over a warm towel infused with peppermint to refresh your hands and face, followed by warmed nuts and a drink of your choice (tray of champagne, seasonal drink, etc).
This is my first time flying first-class on an international flight and before I could even process my experience I was sitting there with a beer, olives and warmed nuts…
In Delta-One, you will enjoy amenities like a 180-degree flat-bed seat, direct aisle access, amenity kit, remote for the TV and timely service. As time passes, and you reach 35,000 feet, the experience continues.
The starter was an arrangement of many goodies:
1. Balsamic Cipollini Glazed Beef Tenderloin w/sautéed spinach and parmesan mashed potatoes
2. Pan-Fried Chicken w/Lemon Caper Picatta Sauce w//Verts and Fresh Ricotta Tortelonne
3. Crab Cakes and Autumn Citrus Salad w/Asparagus and Lemon Butter Sauce
4. Vegetarian Option: Black Truffle Ravioli Gratin w/Creamy Parmesan Sauce and Fresh Cherry Tomatoes
I went with the chicken! The food is good and the menu is predicated on your destination and the time of year. There was no shortage of meals. Happy to have a full stomach on a long flight.
WAKE-UP TO BREAKFAST
Waking up on a plane to a warm breakfast after falling asleep to a movie is one way of doing it… The choices for breakfast were simple.
- Egg bake
- Cereal with fruit, yogurt biscuit, and jam.
I’m a light breakfast guy myself, especially when traveling, so I went with the cereal. Here it is.
Reality is, I could never pay for this flight, but it was a great and spoiled experience. Having the luxury of a fully reclined seat, timely service, unlimited food, and drinks, and all necessary amenities from extra socks to a toothbrush and toothpaste is an experience I will be forever grateful for.
Delta puts on a show and they do it with class. Although this may not be the most luxurious international carrier, it was a memorable time and I hope one day you get to experience it too!
